Sea Kayak Lessons
You’ll benefit from our patient, step-by-step approach developed by the American Canoe Association (ACA).
Lessons are taught by ACA-certified kayak instructors. Most lessons are about 3-4 hours.
Typically, there’s 1 instructor for every 4 students, so you’ll get plenty of support.
Beginner Lessons .
Most students start with our Beginner’s Combo, which includes:
. (1) Kayaking 101 – Essentials of Kayaking; and
. (2) Day Trip / Skills Review.
The first covers essential skills; the second will give you a chance to practice them and explore!

.Kayaking 101 – Essentials of Kayaking
Outfitting, launching, landing, and various strokes and maneuvers, with a focus on technique, safety, and fun! Prereqs: None.
Where? On flat water. Most classes take place at Seneca Creek State Park in Gaithersburg, MD.
When? Choose from: May 12 (full), June 2, June 9, June 29, July 27, August 18 or Sept 8.

Day Trip / Skills Review
Here’s your chance to practice the skills you learned in 101 and explore the world from a kayak. Trite, but true: this is what kayaking is all about! Prereqs: Kayaking 101 or equivalent.
Where? On flat water.
When? Choose from:
May 19 – Potomac River and C & O Canal
June 22 - Jug Bay Wetlands Sanctuary
July 14 – Mattawoman Creek Tributary
Sept 1 – Jug Bay Wetlands Sanctuary

Intermediate Lessons
Kayaking 102 – Safety and Rescue
Build your confidence by learning how to exit the kayak safely and various techniques for getting back in the boat while still on the water! Learn how weather and other conditions can affect your paddling and tips for how to plan a great day trip.
Prereqs: Kayaking 101 or equivalent. Note, you must also have your own boat and gear for Kayaking 102.
Where? On flat water. Most classes take place either on the Potomac or Patuxent Rivers.
When? Choose from July 7 or August 25.

.Kayak Rolling
Having a reliable kayak roll will build your confidence on the water and open up new possibilities for you to explore different environments.
Our patient instructors–often standing right beside you–will break down the roll into its essential parts, and help you to put it all together.
We offer a set of 3 rolling lessons for those who are new to rolling and also individual lessons for those who have rolled before but want to refine their technique and practice.
Lessons are about 2 hours long and there’s usually 1 instructor for every 4 students.
Where? Warm weather classes meet at Angler’s on weekday evenings.
Winter pool classes meet in Takoma Park, MD (a 15 minute walk from the Takoma Metro) on Sunday mornings.
